Candle Flame Meanings and
Interpretations

The Language of Candles
As you begin working with candles, you will discover that they
have a unique language.
The language is expressed by:
In order
to successfully interpret how your magickal work is progressing,
you will be communicating not only with your own subconscious, but
with the Fire elementals as well.
No two candles will ever react the same way when lit even when
they are homemade and all things are known to be equal in their
manufacture. Though undedicated, a candle has unique properties
that individualize it form others of the same batch.
When dedicated and lit, each candle displays its unique
personality (shaped from your desires) that is communicated by the
tiny Fire Element or Salamander housed within the flame.
Communication with you will vary slightly from candle to candle
depending on the task assigned it and how well you have aligned
your intention.
As your candle burns, free your mind and concentrate on the
candle. Watch how the smoke rises and the flame dances and listen
to the sound it makes. The smoke may rise to the East or waft to
the South, the flame may flare or dwindle, and the sounds may be
of a popping nature.
Ask yourself how these actions relate to the Magick you are
performing. The answers you perceive are often startling and
revealing about the true nature of your desires. Do not be
surprised if the unenlightened attribute the language of your
candles to the myriad of "logical"
explanations regarding drafts, chemical compositions, atmospheric
conditions, etc.
When the results are in and heads are scratched
in dismay, just remember that "All of Magick Is a Seeming Array of
Uncanny Coincidence to the Unenlightened."
The Dancing Flame
You will soon realize that your candle flame will frequently wave,
dip, and bob regardless of how carefully you shield it against
drafts.
This is called a dancing flame, one of the ways a candle
communicates with you.
The dance has meaning and once understood, can help you determine
how your Magick is progressing.
The Strong Flame
this indicates that power and energy are going into your desires
for manifestation. This is a very good sign.
When a
figure candle is used, a strong flame generally indicates that the
person represented by the figure is winning or angry or is using
authority over another. when two figure candles are present, the
higher and stronger flame represents authority over another.
The Weak Flame
This can show you that you are facing heavy opposition and must
redo the Magick several times in order to overcome the power you
are facing. The weak flame can also indicate, on a figure candle,
that the subject is losing the battle, argument, etc., against
another. The weak flame that goes out usually means that you have
missed your target altogether. Start over and be more careful of
the intentions you put out.
The Jumping Flame
This is an attention getter. It can indicate raw emotions along
with explosions of energy, depending on the candle used and its
intended purpose. When two figure candles are being used, a
jumping flame usually means that an energetic or heated discussion
or argument is taking place.
Flame
pointing North: Something physical is manifesting. This can be of
long duration.
Flame
Pointing East: Something mental is manifesting. New Ideas,
intuitions.
A Flame Pointing South: Something is happening that is aggressive
in nature, a steamy, hot situation.
A Flame Pointing West: Something emotional manifesting. A good
sign of success.
The Smoke of a candle:
The following general rules apply when interpreting the
direction your candle smoke takes:
North: You will have to work for what you want. Success will not
be easy or rapid. Perseverance is the key here. In the case of
health, it can mean a condition can get worse. Look to other omens
for more information.
East: Success comes with thought and strategy. Carefully review
the situation. Patience is the key here.
South: Success comes rapidly with your request. In the case of
health, your recovery is immanent.
West: When the smoke wafts to the West, the issue is too
emotional. Step back, You are too involved. Look at the situation
from a detached point of view to clear the mind. Then, reanalyze
the problem. Is there something you are overlooking?
The Talking Candle
Candle chatter denotes communication on some level. That level
will depend on the magick you are performing. Chatter is most
common when using figure candles and can denote who is getting
told what and by whom.
Soft, infrequent Chatter: Indicates intimate conversation and, at
times, pure thoughts.
Mild, Frequent Chatter: Someone in a position of authority is
giving orders or directions.
Strong, Frequent Chatter: Denote Arguments, quarrels or loud
disagreements.
Remember, the language of the candle is important. The direction
of the flame, the wafting of the smoke, and the audible chatter
are all a from of communication for divination into past, current,
and future events. Take notes and learn the language of the candle
so you can better understand the workings of your magick. Whenever
you are looking for omens in candle language, always use your
common sense. Remember that each magickal act is different and
reach candle is unique. Combine this awareness with your
subconscious interpretations of the omens and you will find that
your interpretations will vary from those of others under similar
circumstances. Experiment to find out what is right for you.
WHAT IF THE CANDLE BURNS THE
BOTTOM HALF OF THE GLASS BLACK?
There are two meanings which can be applied to this. The first, if
the candle is a prosperity, protection or luck candle, negativity
was sent your way and the candle detected it.
The second, if the candle was being used to harm or dominate
another individual, the spirit of the individual was alarmed and
has reversed the spell. It would be almost be impossible to start
another work of any type once the individual knows and has
protection.
WHAT IF THE CANDLE ONLY BURNS ON ONE SIDE?
This means that the spell will only be part way effective. This
can also mean that the wrong type of candle or candle dressing was
used.
WHAT IF THE GLASS CRACKS?
If the candle is being used for self protection, this means that
the candle broke the negativity in the environment. This can also
mean witchcraft or the presence of secret enemies. If the candle
is being used to dominate an individual, it means that the
protection of this individual was broken.
WHAT IF THE CANDLE FLAME CRACKLES?
If the flame on a candle makes a crackling noise, and the candle
is for self protection, it means that someone is talking about you
and has bad intentions directed toward you. If it is being used to
harm an individual, this means that the individual is thinking
about you.
WHAT IF THE CANDLE HAS MORE THAN ONE FLAME?
The center or main flame represents you. If the candle is being
used for self protection, this means that each flame other than
the center one represents an enemy. If the candle is being used to
dominate another individual, this means that the individual is
being helped by other people.
WHAT IF THE CANDLE FLICKERS?
When a candle flickers, this signifies the presence of spirits.
WHAT IF THE ENTIRE TOP OF THE CANDLE INCLUDING THE WICK IS ON
FIRE?
If the entire tip of the candle catches on fire, this means that
the spell is being fought off by guardian spirits but more than
likely, the spell will be successful.
WHAT IF THE CANDLE FLAME GOES OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A SPELL?
If the spell is for self protection, this means that while you
were performing the spell, witchcraft was directed your way and
your spirits were unable to fight it off. If the spell was
directed toward another individual, their spirits were able to
fight the attack off and has alarmed the individual. Another type
of spell must be performed.
CAN A CANDLE BE EXTINGUISHED AND LIT AGAIN LATER? ( A
matter of opinion).
Only a candle being used to bring prosperity or success to an
individual may be extinguished before it has completely burned. If
the candle is being used to dominate or cause harm to another
individual, the candle flame must never be put out because the
spell will not work. In this case, the guardian spirits of the
other individual will have time to prepare and reverse it back to
you.
HOW DO I PUT A CANDLE FLAME OUT?
Candles can only be turned off by placing a plate over the top of
the candle, thus allowing the flame to extinguish itself
naturally. Candle flames can also be extinguished by using a
candle snuffer.
I.E. ( A magickal or spiritual mediation candle should never been
blown out).
WHAT IF I EXTINGUISHED A CANDLE AND IT LATER TURNED ITSELF BACK
ON?
This means that your guardian spirits do not want you to turn the
candle off because they are detecting something good or bad for
you. At any rate, if the candle is turned off they can not assist
you effectively.
WHAT IF THE SEVEN DAY CANDLE BURNS OUT BEFORE SEVEN DAYS?
If a 7 day Candle burns out before seven days, this means that the
spell is working fast and another one must be lighted immediately.
In the case of prosperity spells, this means money. In the case of
reverse spells, this means that there is a lot of negativity
around you. In the case of spell of harm, this means that the
individuals spirit is fighting it off, but the spell will soon be
effective.
WHAT WILL MAKE A CANDLE SPELL WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY?
The use of the appropriate incense, floor wash or spiritual herbal
bath are all ways to enhance a magical candle spell.

When you first light the candle, if it emits black smoke it is a
sign that it is beginning to remove negative energy from your
desire.
When the smoke is white, then your prayer will be answered, but
there may be some struggles to obtain your desire.
A strong flame is a good indication the candle is working by
sending out a lot of power and energy to bring about a
manifestation of your prayer. This is a sign that the candle is
working rapidly.
A weak or low flame indicates that the candle is working very
slowly to remove an obstacle or to bring in a positive vibration
to your prayer or spell. You are facing some heavy opposition to
having the request granted. It is an indication that you will have
to pray a little longer time before your desire is granted.
A jumping flame can indicate spiritual warfare on your behalf. A
lot of raw energy and power is working. If the c andle is a war
candle then the person whos name is attached to the candle is
fighting.
If the smoke wafts towards you then your prayer is acknowledged.
If the smoke blows in the direction away from you, it is a
definite sign that you still need perserverance in order to obtain
your desire.
If the smoke turns towards your right, then you will need to use a
bit of patience, success will come through using your head.
Again, if the smoke comes towards you, success will come quickly
in granting the prayer.
If the smoke turns towards your left, then you are becoming to
emotionally involved with the situation you are praying for and in
danger of subconsciously sabatoging your own spell so that it will
not be answered.
At times you will hear crackling sounds as the candles are
burning.
This is taken that the spirit is pleading your case on your
behalf. The stronger the crackling sound, the stronger the
opposition is against you.
If the glass breaks, it can indicate, depending on the situation,
that someone is working against you because the pressure is on.
On the other hand, if the work you are doing is an uncrossing or
jinx removing and the glass breaks, then the evil that is against
you is broken.
