John Dee's Five Books of Mystery: Original Sourcebook of Enochian Magic

Discovered in a hidden compartment of an old chest long after his death, the secret writings of John Dee, one of the leading scientists and occultists of Elizabethan England, record in minute detail his research into the occult. Dee concealed his treatises on the nature of humankind's contact with angelic realms and languages throughout his life, and they were nearly lost forever. In his brief biography of John Dee, Joseph Peterson calls him a 'true Renaissance man, ' detailing his work in astronomy, mathematics, navigation, the arts, astrology, and the occult sciences. He was even thought to be the model for Shakespeare's Prospero. All this was preparation for Dee's main achievement: five books, revealed and transcribed between March 1582 and May 1583, bringing to light mysteries and truths that scholars and adepts have been struggling to understand and use ever since. These books detail his system for communicating with the angels, and reveal that the angels were interested in and involved with the exploration and colonization of the New World, and in heralding in a new age or new world order. While Dee's influence was certainly felt in his lifetime, his popularity has grown tremendously since. His system was used and adapted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and subsequently by Aleister Crowley. This new edition of John Dee's Five Books of Mystery is by far the most accessible and complete published to date. Peterson has translated Latin terms and added copious footnotes, putting the instructions and references into context for the modern reader.

Campbell gave on comparative mythology between Eastern andWestern traditions. He discusses the nature of myth, itscharacteristics, domain, uses, and meaning, among many otherthings. He distinguishes between the emphasis of eastern andwestern mythology and how they reinforce religious understandingin their respective cultures. Campbell talks about easternreligion and mythology as supporting the idea that all individualshave the capacity and inherent characteristics of God, or theDivine Consciousness. In eastern religions, everyone has theability to reach Buddha-hood, or Christ-hood, orGod-consciousness. Whereas western religion and mythologyexternalizes the Divine, and access to its qualities relies uponbelonging to a social group that is in relation to that God. Healso talks about the inward journey to the Divine, and howdifferent cultures place different emphasis on this journey. Healso draws parallels between experience of the Divine, schizophrenia, and acid trips. He explains how these are similarand how they differ in great detail and insight

Power of Myth

Amonghis many gifts, Joseph Campbell's most impressive was the uniqueability to take a contemporary situation, such as the murder andfuneral of President John F. Kennedy, and help us understand itsimpact in the context of ancient mythology. Herein lies the powerof The Power of Myth, showing how humans are apt to create andlive out the themes of mythology. Based on a six-part PBStelevision series hosted by Bill Moyers, this classic isespecially compelling because of its engaging question-and-answerformat, creating an easy, conversational approach to complicatedand esoteric topics. For example, when discussing the mythology ofheroes, Campbell and Moyers smoothly segue from the Sumerian skygoddess Inanna to Star Wars' mercenary-turned-hero, Han Solo. Mostimpressive is Campbell's encyclopedic knowledge of myths, demonstrated in his ability to recall the details and archetypesof almost any story, from any point and history, and translate itinto a lesson for spiritual living in the here and now

This series of lectures about myths, symbols and the divine willthrill any Joseph Campbell devotee. The late literatureprofessor's down-home approach to mythology is entertaining, insightful and frequently iconoclastic. His storytelling isbrilliant and often funny, but the series is not withoutblemishes. Campbell's rambling style and abstract content can beoverwhelming for some listeners, and his anti-Judeo-Christianprejudice off-putting. Taped before a live audience, the programhas variable audio quality as Campbell moves around. In spite ofthe historical importance of the tapes, no data is provided aboutwhere and when the lectures occurred

These five lectures on mythology and contemporary society, first presented between 1962 and 1967, have never before beenpublished. Background hiss and microphone pops create a "live"atmosphere, in which Joseph Campbell, best known for The Hero Witha Thousand Faces, comes to life, joking, telling stories andrecounting myths. As always, the presentation is wrapped up in hisspecial perspective on how the intangible world works. Campbell'sgravelly voice and well-crafted words reach out to enthrall thelistener, stimulate the imagination and provoke questions aboutour religious and cultural beliefs

Theselive lectures of Joseph Campbell offer the rare chance to hear amaster teacher explain his ideas. Campbell explores the themes oflove and man's relationship to God and his community, tracing alineage from pre-Christian mythology through the Arthurianlegends. As he identifies related motifs in the traditions of fivecontinents, Campbell teaches listeners how to think aboutspirituality and history. He also communicates his love for histopic, breaking in on himself with suddenly remembered examples orjokes. However, the production quality of these tapes isdistracting. The original recording contains many pops andsqueaks, as well as jangling New Age music that interruptsCampbell in mid-thought

Against the Light
Downloaded: 10 times | Size: 125 pages | Add to wishlist | Download for @50 credits
Against the Light: A NightsideNarrative was published in 1996 and compounds the fact-fictionproblem, as it is written in the first-person, describing the lifeof a 'Kenneth Grant' who mentions knowing Crowley and a host ofother things which actually happened in real life, and a lot ofthings which may not have- however the story is so surreal, psychedelic, deliberately disjointed and of bizarrely mixedtimelines, multiple selves and hyperspatial jumps of location thatperhaps the only way it can be presented is as a novel. Indeed, the astral realms are so odd as to lend themselves ideally to suchfantastic writings; anything can happen (and does), and the endingis a blinder. It would also make a cracking piece of experimentalfilm, too. It's a clich?, but pertinent here: try to imagine themultiple perspectives given by a writer like James Joyce on thesame event, and then imagine how he would have written if spikedwith acid and introduced to ritual magic.
