Grimoire Sympathia — Workshop of the Infinite: Healing without medicine using the spiritual essence of plants, minerals and precious stones.

Charubel, or John Thomas, is best known for his Degrees of the Zodiac Symbolised which, through reinterpretation by Marc Edmund, gave rise to a system known as Sabian Astrology. He also operated a magical order called the Celestial Brotherhood which was broadly similar to the Golden Dawn, i.e. it had a system of progressive grades, claimed its teachings were from hidden adepts and practiced magical rituals. Notable members of the Celestial Brotherhood included John Yarker and Major Francis George Irwin (who worked with Frederick Hockley). Charubel was also in contact with Peter Davidson and Thomas Burgoyne of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light.
This work is quite remarkable, being a grimoire of the spirits of plants, minerals and precious stones. The spirit for each has a name, a sigil and an invocation and these are used for healing purposes. In some instances simple rituals derived from folklore are given. The spirit attributions were derived by means of clairvoyant investigation, though the author is known to be familiar with Culpeper. However, this is not herbalism, the plants are not taken or used to prepare medicine, rather the magician attunes to their spirit to invoke sympathetic magic.
Very few original grimoires were produced throughout the 20th Century and despite its gentle tone, this book is undoubtedly a grimoire — a grimoire which has been constantly overlooked.
Pat Zalewski - Secret Inner Order Rituals of the Golden Dawn

This book is vital for anyone who claims to follow the Golden Dawn tradition. It reveals the depth of the teaching of the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae and Zalewski's instructions show how this may be practically used. Without this material, it is difficult to see how a modern Golden Dawn adept could claim the title. For more than 100 years secret magical manuscripts from the Order of the Golden Dawn's inner order of adepts Rosae Rubeae et Aureae have been unseen by most students of the esoteric. This includes the Golden Dawn Alchemical teachings, Secret Teachings of the Zelator Grade and the important Caduceus paper. These have either been gathering dust on some collector's shelves, or have been worked by those who have continued the Order's work. So secret were these documents, Israel Regardie was unaware of them and subsequently many of the modern Orders of the Hermetic Order of Golden Dawn who were dependent on his encyclopaedic 'Golden Dawn' for their teaching have left out much of this work. However, the papers contained in this book provide the much needed keys to understand the Golden Dawn system in its entirety. However, just as the Golden Dawn was not just intellectual information gathered under one heading but contained oral instruction to make the system come alive, so this material came with extensive traditions that make it useful to the student. For the first time, Golden Dawn authority Pat Zalewski, who was trained by the Inner Order adepts of the Golden Dawn, reveals the key to this material

Women of the Golden Dawn by Mary K.Greer

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded in London in 1888. One of several secret magical societies in existence at the time, the Golden Dawn was noted for the equality it offered women both in its internal hierarchy and when performing mystical ceremonies. While this magical order attracted several more famous followers, William Butler Yeats and George Bernard Shaw among them, Greer's purpose in writing this book is to highlight the lives of four female members. They are Florence Farr, actress; Annie Horniman, patron of the arts; Maud Gonne, aristocratic revolutionary; and Moina Bergson Mathers, artist. All managed to escape suffocating Victorian lifestyles and eventually formed the backbone of the Golden Dawn. In this massive book, Greer explores the many years of intensive study of occult and mystical traditions the women undertook and the personal triumphs and tragedies they experienced along the way. Packed with anecdotes about major literary figures of the time, this account provides a provocative picture of four strong and brilliant women who refused to be hindered by the dictates of Victorian society. However, while this book may prove intriguing as a historical or biographical work, its use of astrology and magic to draw conclusions or explain occurrences may prove distracting to some readers

21st Century Mage: Bring the Divine Down to Earth by Jason Augustus Newcomb

For the first time since its initial translation into English at the turn of the century, Jason Newcomb has reinterpreted the sacred magic of Abramelin the Mage into a completely relevant program for contemporary seekers. In the thirty-one chapters of 21st Century Mage, Newcomb has reinvented the Knowledge and Conversation of Your Holy Guardian Angel ritual. He lays out a course of practice and prayer -- and introduces a whole new generation to the Crowleyan esthetic.
Thought to be the simplest and most effective explanation of secret Western doctrine, The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, a 15th century text, laid the foundation for the nineteenth century occult group, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and set young Aleister Crowley on his spiritual quest. This is the book that served as the cornerstone of Crowley's lifelong practice.

Shortly after leaving the Alpha et Omega (MacGregor Mather's reformulation of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn), Paul Foster Case developed a lecture series entitled "The First Year Course". The purpose of the lectures was to provide students with a firm foundation in spiritual science and practice and to prepare them for Paul Case's rendition of the Golden Dawn Order.
When this coursework was expanded in 1924, the contents of the "The First Year Course" became known as Section A, `The Life Power', and Section B,`The Seven Steps of Spiritual Unfoldment'. The `Life Power' provided a firm foundation of Occult Fundamentals and the `The Seven Steps of Spiritual Unfoldment' utilized the Major Arcana of the Tarot to communicate the stages of Spiritual Evolution.
The early writings of Paul Foster Case are exceptionally clear and represent some of his finest work. Anyone approaching these lessons for the first time are encouraged to spend at least two weeks on each before proceeding to the next. This is precisely the manner in which the lectures and lessons were intended to be assimilated. Paul Case utilizes images in addition to words to communicate principles. Proceeding in such a manner will allow the corresponding ideas to take root and mature and thus facilitate understanding of the next lesson in the series.

The key to this book's value is that it is a reference book of source material meant to live in the context of a Golden Dawn collection. It is packed with original material not to be found elsewhere in print, before or yet again as of the date of this review. While this book will be of interest to everyone who studies Kabbalah, it will be of especial interest to Golden Dawn practitioners and scholars who wish to deepen their knowledge of this particular "GD" approach to Kabbalah. Having said that, it is not a Primer but assumes a basic knowledge of the GD kabbalistic structure and metaphors available elsewhere, from which basis it is a deeper discussion and an enhancement -- even, in some cases, an intriguing challenge to what is elsewhere printed. It will therefore be invaluable to anyone who has already picked up the basics of the Golden Dawn approach to Kabbalah who wants deeper information on a particular point, at which time they can study the original documents inside, which are minimally colored by commentary. A technical example is the Chapter on the ShemHaMephorash, or the name in extension. Zalewski tells where the original Philosophus lecture comes from, and provides an interesting diagram from that original Paper that stands in contrast to the Leo centered ordering of the angels of the Name provided by Mathers, a scheme which is central to the GD understanding of the Tarot pip cards. This may be significant or not to different readers, but is invaluable food for thought to anyone seriously working out for themselves the true attributions of the Name in Extension to the Zodiac and the Tarot.

Buy from Amazon: The Essential Golden Dawn: An Introduction to High Magic by Chic Cicero, Sandra Tabatha Cicero The Essential Golden Dawn The Golden Dawn is one of the most influential and respected systems of magic in the world. Over a century old, the teachings of this once-secret society are considered the capstone of the Western Esoteric Tradition. Yet many of the available books on the subject are too complex or overwhelming for readers just beginning to explore alternative spiritual paths. The Essential Golden Dawn is for those who simply want to find out what the Golden Dawn is and what it has to offer. Written by recognized experts on the topic, this introduction to High Magic is both straightforward and succinct. It explores the origins of Hermeticism and the Western Esoteric Tradition, as well as the rich history of the Golden Dawn and its founders. This guide explains the "laws" of magic and magical philosophy, describes different areas of magical knowledge that a Golden Dawn magician can expect to learn, and presents basic rituals for the novice. If you have been curious about the Golden Dawn, but intimidated by its scope, this concise guide will shed light on this powerful system of practical magic and spiritual growth. Secrets of the Golden Dawn Cypher Manuscript by Carroll Poke Runyon, Poke Runyon This book contains the complete, original Cypher Manuscript of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in facsimile along with fully annotated decipherment, a detailed synopsis of the text and a fascinating history of the manuscript itself. The author provides a scholarly commentary establishing the considerable value of the Cypher Manuscript and offering an elegant defense of Dr. W. Wynn Westcott's motives and methods in creating the Fraulein Sprengel ruse. Runyon suggests that there may have been a real person behind the Sprengel "Charter Myth". The book goes on to reveal that: The Cypher Manuscript contains the ancient design for a radically different Eleven Sphere Tree of Life. Also included is a never-before-published article written especially for this book by the leading Golden Dawn authority, Robert A. Gilbert, on Dr. Westcott's Cypher Notebook (including facsimiles). These are Westcott's actual notes, taken directly from the cyphers, that he, not MacGregor Mathers, used to develop the Golden Dawn's Outer Order rituals. There have been other versions of the Golden Dawn Cypher Manuscript published but this is the only book that fully examines the mysterious document and actually reveals its secrets. This book is more than a reference tool for magicians, it is a significant commentary on the origins of the Golden Dawn -- and of interest to all thoughtful students of the esoteric.
